Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk asked a vote of parliamentary confidence on Monday in trying to demonstrate continuous support for his Pro-EU government, after a nationalist candidate won the presidential election.
In a television speech, Tusk said he will “soon asks for a vote of confidence in the lower room“In his coalition government.
He expressed his hope that he would be able to cooperate with the elected President Karol Nawrocki.
“As a prime minister, I will never stop my work and our common struggle for Poland our dreams … free, sovereign, safe and prosper.”Tusk said.
“The presidential elections have not changed anything here and they will change nothing.”
Tusk's government has had a majority in Parliament since taking over the leadership of the Law and Justice (PIS) Party following the parliamentary elections of 2023. However, there are internal divisions in the coalition, which experts say could be exacerbated by Nawrocki's victory.
Nawrocki, a conservative historian and former amateur boxer, won the elections on Sunday with 50.89% of the votes, according to the final results announced on Monday, deviating his counter-candidate, Rafał Trzaskowski, the Liberal Mayor of Warsaw and ally of Tusk, who obtained 49.11%.
