The church on this day honors the memory of the noble prince Dovmont Pskovsky (in the holy baptism of Timofei). In Rus', this saint was nicknamed the Drummer, since his holiday was during active work in the garden. In particular, cucumbers began to plant in the northern regions on Timofey. “Timothy came – this cucumbers are soon,” the people said.
Interestingly, they usually tried to do this work secretly – this was especially true for the first bed. The first grown cucumber was later also supposed to tear and bury in a hidden place as soon as possible. It was believed that if someone outsider sees the first cucumber, then all the lashes will soon dry.
In warmer areas, cucumbers on the Day of Timofei the Driven have already gone. At this time, they looked: the lashes are yellowing. If this happened, they said that this is the result of the evil eye of the unkind neighbors. Other signs of this day are associated with cucumbers. A large harvest of this vegetable portended the abundance of cones on the fir trees.
