The Minister of Finance, Tanczos Barna, spoke to the Government on Monday, about a “correct approach” from the European Commission, on June 4. “I hope that on June 4, even if it is a Deadline for all Member States, we will have a correct approach from the European Commission and to have this time for a few days, weeks, we can present proposals for measures that are worked on,” said Tanczos Barna, asked by journalists about the discussions that Romania has held.
We remind that Romania now risks the suspension of European funds for not fulfilling the fiscal reform commitments. The government in damage formula risks endangering up to 13.5 billion euros in PNRR, for which it is in a difficult process of renegotiation with the European Commission, according to profit.ro.
The European Commission will meet in two days and will decide whether or not to propose to suspend Romania's access to European funds.
“We will continue the discussions with the European Commission, offering the information I ask for and then we will have an answer from the people,” added the minister, without clear if Romania will ask for a delay of the decision.
Tanczos Barna: offered another perspective after winning the elections by Nicușor Dan
The minister considers that another perspective to the European Commission is offered after winning the presidential elections by Nicușor Dan. “This possibility of leaving the political crisis was created in Romania by winning the elections by Mr. Nicușor Dan,” said Tanczos Barna. According to the minister, this is a “positive element” in terms of discussions with the Commission.
So far, there have been uncertainties. “We have this uncertainty at the US level – the European Union, this dispute on customs duties, which certainly affects the economy of Europe, not just the economy of Romania. We have this last analysis from statistics that says that the evolution of the economy in the first months was affected by this political uncertainty,” said the minister.
He said that there have been many discussions with the European Commission since January. “We offered the details required regarding the measures taken in December, and the details related to the budget that is the impact, what are our calculations, how we try to fit in the target of 7% deficit,” said Tanczos Barna.
