The Vice -President of the European Parliament “requested emergency support from the European Union for Salina Praid and the communities affected by floods”

Victor Negrescu, vice -president of the European Parliament, announced that he sent a letter to the European Commissioner for humanitarian aid and crisis management and has requested “the immediate support of the European Commission in managing the Praid Salina crisis, affected by massive floods, as well as for localities hit by calamities”.

“I asked for emergency support from the European Union for Salina Praid and the communities affected by the floods. I sent an official letter to the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, requesting the immediate support of the European Commission in the Crisis from Salina Praid, affected by massive floods, as well as for the localities,” Saturday, in a Facebook post.

The official says he asked for support for:

  • evaluation of structural stability, technical support for water evacuation, restoring the affected infrastructure and strengthening in front of future risks;
  • coordinating a quick European response, including by mobilizing emergency funds;
  • Financial support for the settlement of the amounts invested or necessary from European funds, including those intended for calamities.

“As the chief negotiator of the European Parliament for the EU budget of 2025, we obtained essential funds to address the emergency situations for this year as affects the Praid saline. For example, we secured 3 billion euros from the cohesion policy for the regions affected by the natural disasters from the previous years and 211 million euros.” Negrescu.

He described Salina Praid as “a national symbol”.

“Salina Praid is not just an economic objective. It is a strategic resource for Romania, a source of income for the whole region and a national symbol. People affected by floods need European solidarity. We need to mobilize all the resources available to save what can continue to be saved,” concluded Victor Negrescu.

In the areas affected by the floods, the President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, went on Saturday, who estimated that in three to four months, it will be possible to know, following a study, if Salina Praid could be saved entirely or only partially.
