In 2024, 19.5 million children living in European Union countries were at risk of poverty or social exclusion – according to the latest data of the EU statistical office of Eurostat.

As for the other community countries, the highest percentage of children at risk of poverty in 2024 was recorded in Bulgaria (35.1 percent), Spain (34.6 percent) and Romania (33.8 percent). In turn, the lowest indicators occurred in Slovenia (11.8 percent), in Cyprus (14.8 percent) and in the Czech Republic (15.4 percent).

The highest increase in this phenomenon was recorded in Finland, where this indicator increased by as much as 3.5 percentage points compared to 2023. Further major increases took place in Croatia (+2 pp), as well as in Belgium and Bulgaria, where the increase was 1.2 pp, in turn, the largest declines were observed in Romania (-5.2 pp), Ireland (-3.7 pp) and Hungary (-3.3 pp). Italy was the only EU member state in which the level of this indicator remained unchanged, persistent at 27.1 percent.

According to Eurostat analyzes, children are more threatened with poverty than the rest of the EU society; The problem of poverty or social exclusion concerns 20.3 percent. adult residents of the EU (aged 18 and older).
