The statement was made on Thursday, May 29, by Dan Șucu, the president of the Concordia Employers Confederation, at the end of a meeting with President Nicușor Dan.

“We have a very clear point of view. The taxes already paid by companies are very high. From our point of view, the problems regarding the deficit are related to the far too wide spending of public money. We do not agree with tax increases”, said Dan Șucu in front of the journalists.

He said that the business environment is waiting to see how the announced commission will work to reduce budgetary expenses and how its conclusions will be implemented.

Another entrepreneur present at the meeting emphasized the importance of economic growth as a solution to reduce the deficit and sustainable development of the economy:

“The important priority that Romania has in the context now is to continue the economic acceleration.

In this context, the entrepreneur recalled that Romania still has the largest VAT GAP in the European Union – double compared to Bulgaria -, a problem that could be reduced by the efficient digitalization of ANAF and the use of data already collected.

“There are so many inefficiencies in the state companies, the administrative, bureaucratic, very wide.”

Discussions have not aimed at increasing VAT or job tax

Ask whether in the discussion he spoke concretely about the increase of VAT, income tax or contributions, the entrepreneurs replied that this subject was not addressed, the focus being put on structural and efficient measures, not on fiscal increases.

And SME representatives expressed the same firm position: “IMM Romania also supported the decrease of budgetary expenses and we oppose, as well as Concordia, the increase of taxes. We also asked the president we congratulate on the occasion of the election and also for the counselors that he chose, to take into account that those discussions with the political environment must include the environment and to have a constructive environment and so that the business environment Namely, to reduce the budget deficit ”, they transmitted.

In conclusion, the entrepreneurs have drawn an alarm signal regarding the fiscal sustainability of Romania, comparing the situation of a country with that of a private company:

“If a company in our environment in which we operate everyday would be lost for years and would go to the bank to ask for a loan, you think there is a bank that would give it a reduced interest loan or without important guarantees before raising the income of those companies, the question would arise what costs need to be optimized and reduced.”
