Mohammad Sinwar was elevated to the leader of the Palestinian militant group last year, after Israel killed his brother Yahya in the fight during the ongoing war in Gaza.

Yahya Sinwar set up the October 2023 attack on Israel that triggered the war, and was later appointed a general leader of the group after Israel killed her predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh in Iran, according to News.

Two weeks ago, Israel attacked a hospital in Khan Younis, in the south of the Gaza strip, leaving Mohammad Sinwar, but his death was not immediately confirmed.

Who was Mohammad Sinwar

Israeli officials considered Mohammad Sinwar as intransigent as his brother, Yahya, but with a much bigger military experience. According to the Israeli army (IDF), he ordered the Khan Younis brigade until 2016. As Yahya, he is considered one of the main organizers of the terrorist attack on October 7, 2023 on Israel.

From the beginning of the war, he remained hiddentogether with many of the high -ranking leaders of Hamas in Gaza. In December 2023, IDF u broadcast a video recording claiming to be Mohammad Sinwar driving a vehicle through a tunnel in Gaza. In February 2024, IDF said he had located his office in western Khan Younis. The US ambassador to Israel, Dan Shapiro, said Sinwar was probably an obstacle to negotiations. “There is little chance that the war will end before it dies,” He told CNN Shapiro, a senior member of the Atlantic Council. “Its removal could open the door to release all hostages and start the movement to a post -war future for Gaza without Hamas ”, Shapiro pointed out.

Before the October attack, Yahya Sinwar was primarily the one in the viewfinder of the Israeli army. Closed for four life convictions in 1988, Yahya became fluent in Hebrew and said she had spent her years studying her enemy.

It was released in 2011 as part of the agreement for the liberation of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who had been held hostage by Hamas in Gaza for five years. His release was attributed to the fact that his brother, Mohammad, was one of Shalit's kidnappers and insisted on the inclusion of Yahya in agreement.

Returning to Gaza, Yahya quickly advanced among the militant organization, eventually reaching her leader.

After October 7, Yahya became the most sought after man by Israel. US officials thought Israel has approached Yahya several times, removing it from underground hiding places. But Yahya moved undetected in the tunnels below Gaza, rarely leaving the surface and avoiding the detection by the electronic supervision of Israel. Finally, Yahya's body was discovered in Rafah, in the south of the strip, by a routine Israeli patrol that was engaged in a fire exchange.
