The bankruptcy trustee of the Northvolt factory in Skelleftea in the north of Sweden announced on Thursday to stop production at the end of June. The decision means releasing the vast majority of 900 people employed at the plant.

In a statement, Syndyk Mikael Kubu wrote that the continuation of the production of battery cells was possible thanks to the only customer – SCANIA truck producer. According to the Swedish public broadcaster SVT, Scania decided on another cheaper battery supplier for electric vehicles – a Chinese company CATL.
The trustee still failed to find a buyer for a factory in Skelleftea. Kubu W pointed out that there are not many potential buyers of this type of large projects in the world. “Such activity requires support from the (Swedish) or the EU to develop,” emphasized the trustee, quoted by the Swedish radio.
The Swedish government has so far refused to invest public money.
Northvolt was to produce car batteries to make European industry become independent of the need to import these components from China. In practice, it turned out to be difficult. The media wrote that the batteries produced in Sweden contained Chinese components. Northvolt, which was struggling with financial difficulties and the lack of clients, filed for bankruptcy. In 2024, the company employed several thousand people.
According to SVT, at the beginning of next week, 900 employees of the Skelleftea factory are to find out about the order of dismissals. The production is to be gradually dimmed, and at the end of June ends. In July, only the people responsible for maintaining the facility are to remain. There are many immigrants among workers who have received a residence permit on the basis of an employment contract. For them, release means the need to find a new job within three months or leave the country.
