Rusal company helps to preserve Siberian forests from fires

The company Rusal implements a climatic project to preserve the Siberian forests. About him was told by the head of the Institute of Forest named after V.N. Sukachev SB RAS, Alexander Onuchin in an interview with Lenta.ru. The Institute is a scientific partner of Rusal in this project.

The professor recalled that the Siberian taiga is the largest forest biom of the planet. It occupies more than 15% of world forests. A unique ecosystem includes a large number of plants and animals, many of which are unique. For every 100 square meters. Forest meters account for up to 120-150 species of plants. Some of them are at risk of disappearance.

“Forests form the conditions necessary for human life, serve as a source of natural resources, are the habitat for many species, including rare and disappearing. Their role in maintaining global biological diversity is a decisive“, – Notes Alexander Onuchin.

However, forests are constantly faced with various threats. These are fires, pests, pollution and climate change. To protect them, scientific knowledge and effective climatic projects are needed. One of them has been implementing Rusal in the Krasnoyarsk Territory since 2019 in the Krasnoyarsk Territory.

As part of the project, aviation protection of forests from fires is carried out at the expense of the company. It is designed for the period from 2019 to 2033. Timely extinguishing fires will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect forests and habitats for many species.

“We also consider the possibility of creating a monitoring network of biological diversity at test training grounds. This is important for assessing the effectiveness of natural-climatic projects and adaptive forest management“, – The professor explained.

The Institute of Forest named after V.N. Sukachev is a scientific partner of Rusal. Scientists conduct environmental monitoring and participate in the development of carbon farms projects. Now the project claims to be a grant of the Russian Scientific Fund. Its results will help Rusal scientifically substantiate the calculations of greenhouse gases.
