Former President Traian Basescu believes that the PSD will “break up” if the Social Democrats will refuse to be part of the future government. “The idea that they will be restored to the opposition is wrong in their case,” says the former head of state, accusing that such a decision represents “a sign of cowardice”.

Asked on Monday, in an intervention at Digi24, if a minority government, without PSD, can be a stable one, Traian Basescu has been skeptical, given the difficult economic period.

“The PSD must be in government. If it refuses to enter the governance, this party breaks down. The idea that they will recover in the opposition is wrong in their case and in the current situation, because they have the major responsibility of the situation in which the country, the economy, the budget, the commercial deficit,” the former president said.

The Social Democrats “governed negligently, without being responsible for what they do. If they went into opposition it would be a sign of cowardice and by no means of maturity. They would flee from the moment they must straighten what they broke,” said Traian Basescu, quoted by News.ro.

The former head of state added that PSD leaders will realize that “the opposition is a higher risk than staying in power”

On Monday, Marcel Ciolacu announced his resignation as president of the PSD, during the informal meeting of the social-democratic management that took place at Vila Lac, sources from the party for Hotnews said.

Ciolacu's resignation comes in the context in which Nicușor Dan won the presidential elections, and in the following days he must designate a candidate for the position of prime minister, a position from which Ciolacu has already resigned on May 5, the day after the first round of elections.

Robert Negoiță, the mayor of Sector 3 of the Capital, believes that the time has come for PSD to pass in the opposition. “I want a reformed PSD, responsible and not to leave the impression of a gang running after functions,” wrote the mayor, in a message published on his Facebook page.

However, another leader in the PSD transmitted a more nuanced position. Constantin Rădulescu, the president of PSD Vâlcea, said that a possible participation of the social democrats in government should be decided by the party leaders only after the consultations in Cotroceni and after consulting all the organizations in the country.

“I believe that if the future president of Romania said that he wants to talk to the pro-European PSD, PNL, USR, UDMR parties, these parties must show responsibility and the consultations that will eventually be an important signal for what the future of this country means in an economic context, in a world context, in a world context. Consultations.

The PSD leaders will meet on Tuesday, from 1:00 pm, in a meeting of the National Political Council, to decide what they will do in the future.
