People's calendar

Arina Kaputnitsa, Arina Seedl

On this day, Irina’s memory (in the Russian tradition – Arina) of the Macedonian, who became the first woman revered in the face of great martyrs, is celebrated.

On Arina, as well as on Moor, in Rus' they planted seedlings on the beds – mainly cabbage and cucumbers. By the way, it was believed that only women should do this – and preferably in complete solitude, so that no one would jinx. Having planted the first sprout of cabbage, it was covered with a large pot, and a pot with a white tablecloth so that the forks turned out to be the same large, white and tight. On the edges of the beds, nettles were sown, which was supposed to scare off the evil spirits and harmful insects.

Cabbage was one of the most favorite vegetables among the people. Many sayings were added to her: “No cabbage without cabbage is dense”; “Wisdom in droves, power in cabbage”; “Why is the garden to fence if you do not plant cabbage?”

They carried out other agricultural work on this day – for example, they burned mowing to get rid of old, dried grass.

“Cabbage” was also called one of the types of round dance, common in the northern regions. It forms like this: the guy makes a song and forms a chain from the players, taking one or the other by the hand.
