The golden train of the Nazis, a new track? An anonymous letter sent to the authorities in Poland would reveal the location of “Hitler's treasure”

The Polish authorities analyze a new complaint regarding the alleged Nazi train loaded with gold, of which the legend says they would have disappeared in the last months of the Second World War. The document contains geodesic data, tunnel sketches and the testimony of a witness.

The hopes in discovering the famous Nazi “gold train” were recently rejected, after the Wałbrzych authorities, a city in southwest Poland, received an anonymous letter saying that they would have located an underground gallery in which there are three train wagons from the Second World War. According to him, the wagons would contain precious metals, including gold.

The letter, dated April 23, was sent to local officials and includes four annexes: precise geodetic data, a topographic profile of the land, maps that simulate the railway route and a statement of a witness who would have lived in the area during the war.

“These are three railway wagons, camouflaged in a closed tunnel with a sliding metal gate. Each wagon is about 12 meters long and four meters high and width,” the document sent.

Kamila świerczylska, the spokesman of the Wałbrzych City Hall, confirmed the receipt of a detailed complaint, without giving details about the author. “The letter seems to be drafted in a rigorous way, containing concrete information and cartographic elements that are worth verifying,” she said.

For his part, Anna Nowakowska, the head of the local branch of the provincial office for the protection of monuments, said that the author would have reached these conclusions “following the corroboration of several sources and historical documents”.

The legend of the Nazi train

The legend of the Nazi train, assumed loaded with art objects, gold and other values - including pieces from the amber room – dates from the last months of the war. According to some sources, the train would have left Breslau (current Wrocław), but would never have reached its final destination, Wałbrzych. It is assumed that they were diverted and hidden in one of the many underground tunnels built by the Nazis in the region of the owls of the Suds.

Despite the enthusiasm that such a complaint can generate, the local authorities have stated that the person who sent the documents has not yet requested an official authorization to start archaeological research.

Recent history forces caution. In 2015, two exploration enthusiasts, Piotr Koper and Andreas Richter, said they identified the train with a special radar. Subsequently, their statements proved unfounded. More recently, in 2023, the Historical and Exploration Association Joćwież discovered a buried railway and a set of train wheels near the Mammerki bunker, in northern Poland – an area that hosted the general neighborhood of the German army and not far from the famous “Wolfsschaze” bunker. However, the connection with the mythical train of gold remains unclear.

The Polish authorities will decide whether they will initiate an official investigation based on new information.
