The holiday was called named Holy Jeremiah – the second of the four great prophets mentioned in the Old Testament.
The saint received his popular nickname because at that time the most important rural work was going on in Rus' – plowing and settling the fields. They were exhausting for both farmers and working livestock, and the peasants asked for heavenly help. They believed that at this time the Prophet Jeremiah himself harnesses his chariot and helps those who are treating him with prayer. The reason for such a belief was probably the consonance of the name of the saint with the word “yoke”.
