Greenland took over the presidency of the Arctic Council

Located in the Arctic region and dependent on Denmark, Greenland took over on Monday a two -year conductivity in the Arctic Council, which includes, among others USA and Russia.


From 2023, Norway was the presidency in this organization. At the hands of the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of this country, Espana Barth Eide in Tromsoe, a symbolic hammer received the Vivian Motzfeldt Greenland diplomacy on Monday.
“In difficult times in the world we want our work to benefit the inhabitants of the Arctic,” she emphasized.
The priorities of Danish-Greenland conductivity are: native people and the region's community, sustainable economic development and energy transformation, sea and oceans, climate change in the Arctic and biological diversity.
The fourteenth session of the Arctic Council takes place in the virtual formula.
After a full -size Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, diplomatic contacts with Russia were suspended in the Arctic Council. The Norway government, which from 2023 managed the work of the organization, maintained relations with Moscow at a minimum, working level.
According to comments in the Danish media, relations with the US administration after US President Donald Trump's claims against Greenland will also be a challenge for the governments in Copenhagen and Nuuk. The new approach of the United States authorities, limiting climate policy, is also concerned about concern.
The deterioration of Danish-American relations brought Denmark and Greenland and meant that the authorities in Copenhagen allowed the role of the island's authorities to be chaired in the Arctic Council. Kenneth Hoegh, a previously Greenland diplomat at the representative office of Greenland in Washington, was appointed a Danish Arctic ambassador.
Eight countries of this region are members of the Arctic Council: Canada, Denmark with Greenland and Sheep Islands, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Russia and the United States.(PAP)
