At least four people were killed and four are critical as a result of a fire that broke out on Sunday in a residential building in Milwaukee in the American state of Wisconsin. According to witnesses, to save themselves from flames, people jumped from the windows of the third, highest floor of the building.

Threatened residents stood in the windows, from where firefighters saved them with the help of ladders. Inside the three -story building, some firefighters had to crawl to get people out. Outside, people extracted from the building were resuscitated, and some moved to ambulances on a stretcher.

“We are deeply saddened with a tragic fire that took place early in the morning, on May 11, in a four -storey residential building in the Concordia district in Milwaukee. Four people lost their lives, and many others were evacuated and deeply affected by this devastating event” – we read on the fire brigade profile from Milwaukee on Facebook. “Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and everyone who was affected by this tragedy,” he added.

Firefighters also thanked the services from neighboring municipalities who acted “quickly, with courage and compassion.” According to CNN, about 30 fire brigades took part in the action.

The authorities have not yet reported how the fire could occur. The investigation is underway. The building was built in 1968, when the order to install the fire sprinkles system was not yet in force.

“It's a sad day for the city,” the mayor of Milwaukee Cavalier Johnson wrote on Facebook. “I talked to both firefighters and evacuated residents and heard about many dramatic escapes and rescue operations from a burning residential building. The authorities examine the cause of the fire. My thoughts are with all the affected this tragedy,” he assured.

The building was destroyed to an extent that prevents re -living in it. This means that about 200 people will have to look for a new roof over their heads.
