“It will be like a living room in the clouds.” The creators of the new futuristic aircraft describe their project

United Airlines invest billions of dollars in innovative aerial projects, including electric air taxis and supersonic aircraft. Now it's time for something new: a machine that is basically one big wing.

American lines have already announced plans to purchase up to 200 aircraft with the “Blended-Wing Body” (BWB) from the Jetzero California startup. The company intends to compete with Airbus and Boeing, creating a plane that consumes half as much fuel than traditional machines of similar sizes. The changes will also be clearly felt for travelers.

The Z4 aircraft, which can take 250 passengers, has not yet obtained certification, but Jetzero is planning his commercial debut in 2030. In 2024, the company successfully carried out a flight of a reduced prototype.

Andrew Chang, managing director of United Airlines Ventures – the department responsible for innovative investments – Business Insider told that The scaled wing Z4 will create a “salon in the clouds”.

– We will re -design the whole experience of passenger travel, from the way of occupying places, through boarding and off, to the deck service – emphasized Chang.

In order for the order to take place, Jetzero must prove that this concept is real and build a full -size prototype by 2027. The machine must also meet the United requirements in terms of costs, fuel consumption and safety.

Chang, however, expressed the belief that the startup – also supported by the US Air Force – would meet the challenge.

– The team has extensive experience gained in companies such as Airbus and Boeing – he noted.

A larger wing is more space for passengers

The futuristic Jetzero design connects the wings and hull into one load -bearing surface. Such a block significantly expands the cabin, allowing United to mount over a dozen seats in a row. For comparison, today's wide -body machines have a maximum of 10 places in a row. The densest configuration – 11 seats – was considered for the largest passenger aircraft in the world, Airbus A380, but no airline decided to implement it.

Z4 will be shorter than traditional aircraft. As Chang explained, instead of 20 or 30 rows of places, Z4 will have about 10-15.

It will appear in the cabin More transitions to facilitate movement, as well as even four front door, which will speed up the process of boarding and lowering the machine.

Chang noted that the aircraft will offer places in the economy and premium class, with access to Wi-Fi Starlink and on-board entertainment. The atmosphere of “living room in the air” is to be on board.

Each square meter of space should bring revenues, so it should be used as much as possible He assessed.

It is not yet known what new solutions will introduce United. However, the competitor Jetzero-Natilus-already presents its ideas for the designed 200-person aircraft with a BWB construction, called Horizon.

In an interview with Business Insider in October, the head of Natilus Aleksey Matyushev said that Horizon could have special holiday zones or play rooms to compensate for the potential lack of places by the windows.

Delta Airlines also cooperates with Jetzero as a development partner. Lines suggest that there will be Seats and toilets for people with disabilities and individual luggage compartments.

Alaska Airlines claims that the new construction will provide quieter flight experience.

Jetzero can replace some older boeing united airlines

Jetzero argues that thanks to more effective load capacity and smaller air resistance, the Z4 aircraft can reduce fuel consumption by 50 percent. on a passenger, while maintaining a range of approx. 9,250 km without intermittent. The machine will use traditional jet engines and will fly on both conventional and sustainable air fuel.

Chang pointed out that this efficiency and the resulting savings can make the new aircraft become an alternative to medium -sized machines, such as Boeing 757 and Boeing 767. United plans to withdraw these older aircraft by 2026 and 2030, respectively.

United announced in a press release that a flight from Newark in New Jersey to Palma de Mallorca in Spain would use up to 45 percent. Less fuel than the plane flying along this route.

Boeing 767 United supports a seasonal transatlantic flight in the summer. The new Jetzero aircraft could take over this route, and its design would allow integration with the existing airport infrastructure on both sides of the ocean.

The commercialization of the Jetzero aircraft is still a matter of the future. Therefore, United plans to receive modern aircraft such as Airbus A321XLR and Boeing 787 Dreamliner, as more safe and proven deputies for 757 and 767 machines.

However, if Z4 receives certification, it will be another aircraft with a large range, high capacity and low operating costs. This aircraft would offer a larger range and capacity than A321XLR, but less than 787-9 and 787-10. Z4 would accommodate slightly more passengers than the smallest version of Dreamliner, 787-8.

We think Jetzero is a real revolution. This is a completely new way for aviation – adds Chang.
