Romania has signed its first memorandum with Turkey for bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, including for natural gas deliveries to Romania – up to 4 million cubic meters a day, when needed, announced Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja. But he also said, in February, asked if the gases brought from Turkey at that time were Russian: “The gas molecule has no flag. The Turks say it is Turkish gas, even if it comes from Russia.”
“At the end of last week I participated in the International Summit of Natural Resources in Istanbul, at the invitation of the Turkish Minister of Energy, my friend, Alparslan Bayraktar. It was an applied meeting, in which I discussed the consolidation of bilateral cooperation in the energy field – from the security of the supply with natural gas, to the regional energy.
On this occasion I signed the first memorandum for bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, including for natural gas deliveries to Romania – up to 4 million cubic meters a day, when needed ”, wrote on Facebook, Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja.
It is an agreement that offers stability in a complicated regional context, he continued.
“We also discussed the Gases in the Black Sea, about Neptun Deep, about the stage of the Tuzla -Podișor gas pipeline and about the interest of Turkish investors for green, solar and wind energy production projects.”
Burduja, in February: Gas has certificates of origin, but the Turks believe that the gas in Turkey is Turkish, even if it comes from Russia
Officially, Romania no longer imports Russian gases since 2022. But in February, when the temperatures were very low and some traders from Romania imported gas from Turkey, there were suspicions that those quantities actually came from Russia.
The Russian federation exports gas to Turkey through the Turkstream pipeline.
In a press conference at that time, Burduja admitted that the imports of gases coming to our country in the south, via Bulgaria and Turkey, could actually come from Russia. This is because Turkey labels the gas it exports as Turkish, whether it bought it from Russia or Azerbaijan.
The minister was asked by journalists if it is true that some quantities of gases imported these days from Romania come from Russia.
“From what we know from the suppliers, it is not (Russian gas-no) and many of them have assumed this. They have these origin certificates. ANRE can do an analysis to see exactly.
Of course, you know, the gas molecule has no flag, I said this. The gas comes from Turkey and the Turks believe that any gas molecule in Turkey is Turkish gas, although they also import from Azerbaijan, and from the Russian Federation. It is difficult to say that a gas molecule that helps in Romania comes from Azerbaijan or other parts, ”the minister said.
Serious accusations: Some gas suppliers in Romania import expensive Russian gases from Bulgaria, which the Romanian state then settles
