A “black list” circulates on the Internet, with Romanian officials subjected to American sanctions. Everything is a fake, says the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who felt the need to react. The list appeared on Romania TV, after the US announcement with the exclusion of Romania from the Visa Waiver program.
“The information conveyed in artificially amplified posts on social media platforms on a so-called” black list “of the American administration is false and represents a new attempt to manipulate and interference, meant to compromise the confidence of citizens in the authorities,” says the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an information sent to the press on Saturday night.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also states that “this new misinformation has all the characteristics of actions of manipulation and interference (Fimi) carried out by state actors and amplified by political organizations, for electoral purposes.”
The US Embassy in Bucharest takes on Saturday a warning reported by the Bureau for Terrorism and Financial Information within the United States Treasury, which talks about a series of online stories that “support the application of American sanctions to Romanian officials”.
“These reports have no foundation. The US government has not made any announcement about the application of American sanctions against some people in Romania,” the American institution points out, specifying that all the general information on existing American sanctions and the designation of sanctioned persons are only available on the official website of the US Treasury, on the Page of the External Active Control Bureau.
