“We condemn the continuation of these illegal sanctions and pressure on Iran's trading partners,” said Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs cited by Iran International.

The ministry emphasized in the announcement Iran's involvement in diplomacy, as evidenced by three rounds of talks with the US, including on the Iranian nuclear program. “We have defined our demands, including the abolition of unfair sanctions,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added.

On Thursday, President Trump wrote on the Truth Social social network that “all purchases of Iranian oil or petrochemical products must be immediately suspended!” He warned that everyone who “buys any amount of oil (…) from Iran would be subject to immediate secondary sanctions. They will not be allowed to conduct business with the United States of America in any form,” he announced.

In 2015, Iran and world powers concluded a nuclear agreement, which was to limit the Tehran nuclear program in exchange for the abolition of some sanctions. The contract provided for, among others Limiting uranium enrichment to 3.67 percent

During the first presidency of Trump, the US withdrew from the agreement in 2018. Iran also left his records, enriching uranium above the designated limit. The West accuses Tehran of secretly developing the ability necessary for the production of nuclear weapons. The Iranian side denies and emphasizes that its nuclear program is only civil.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (Maea) from autumn 2024, Iran significantly increased its supplies of enriched uranium, including fuel with a purity of 60 %, and thus similar to the level enabling the production of nuclear weapons.

In February, Trump restored the “maximum pressure” campaign to Iran. Its purpose is to completely stop the export of Iranian oil, which would lead to the resignation of Tehran from the production of nuclear weapons. (PAP)
