US President Donald Trump joked on Tuesday, saying he would like to be the next pope, answering the questions asked by journalists before heading to Michigan for a rally meant to mark his 100th day. Trump has also said that there is a New York cardinal who would be “very good” as a potential choice for the leadership of the Catholic Church, reports Sky News.

Donald Trump was asked on Tuesday in front of the White House who believes that the new Pope should be, given that the cardinals will meet next week in Conclav to choose the new head of the Catholic Church after Pope Francis's death, writes News.ro.

Smiling when he heard the question, Trump replied, “As a pope? I would like to be a pope. That would be my number one choice.”

He continued to say that he did not have a preference for who should be the new Pontiff, but suggested that Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York could be a good choice.

“I don't know. I don't have a preference,” he said. “But I must say that we have a cardinal from a place called New York which is very good, so we will see what is happening,” said the head of the White House.

Pope Francis's death on the second Easter day marked a mourning period for millions of Catholics around the world. His funerals took place on Saturday in Saint Peter Square in the Vatican, in front of the heads of state, including Donald Trump, the clergy and the general public. Francis's body was buried in the Church of Saint Mary the Great, one of the four papal basilics in Rome.

Speculations increased about who could be the next pope, while betting quotas and discussions on social networks have increased, some wondering if Donald Trump's influence will be felt here.
