Actor Eric Dane's final interview before his death is now available on Netflix as part of “Famous Last Words,” a series of interviews the streaming platform takes on celebrities for publication after they pass away, Variety reports.
According to Netflix, these interviews “give audiences around the world the opportunity to listen to a cultural icon after he's passed on.” Dane, known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on “Grey's Anatomy,” died Thursday, nearly 10 months after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the neurodegenerative disease that Stephen Hawking also suffered from.
In a strange coincidence that moved fans, Dane died exactly 20 years after he first appeared on “Grey's Anatomy.” Eric Dane was 53 years old.
Netflix points out that the actor's interview was “conducted under an agreement that the episode would only air after his death.” The series “Famous Last Words” debuted on Netflix last fall with a posthumously published interview with Dr. Jane Goodall, the researcher renowned for her in-depth studies of chimpanzees.
Eric Dane's message at the end of the Netflix interview
At the end of Netflix's 50-minute interview with Dane, the actor gave a direct message, looking into the camera, to his daughters Billie and Georgia, saying:
“These words are for you. I tried. Sometimes I stumbled, but I tried. All in all, we had a great time, didn't we? I remember all the times we spent at the beach, you two, me and my mother—in Santa Monica, Hawaii, Mexico. I can still see you playing in the ocean for hours, my little mermaids. Those days, pun intended, were heaven. I want to tell you four things that I learned from this disease and I hope you don't just listen to me with your ears. I hope you really hear me.”
“First of all, live in the now. Right now. In the present. It's hard, but I've learned to do that,” Dane continued.
“For years I wandered mentally, lost in my own thoughts for long periods of time, immersed in self-pity, shame and doubt. I replayed decisions in my mind, doubted myself: 'I shouldn't have done this. I should never have done that.' That's it. Out of sheer survival instinct, I'm forced to stay in the present. But I don't want to be anywhere else either. The past contains regrets. The future remains unknown. So you have to live in the present. Enjoy every moment,” he said.
The advice left by the actor for his daughters
“Secondly, fall in love,” Dane continued. “Not necessarily a person, although I recommend that too. But fall in love with something. Find your passion, your joy. Find that thing that makes you want to get out of bed in the morning, that gets you through the day. I fell in love for the first time when I was about your age. I fell in love with acting. That love ultimately got me through the most darkest hours, darkest days, darkest year of my life. I still love my work, I still look forward to it, I still want to be in front of the camera and play my part,” he continued.
“My work doesn't define me, but it excites me. Find something that excites you. Find your path, your purpose, your dream. Then go all the way. Really go all the way,” the actor emphasized.
Dane's third lesson to his daughters is to “choose your friends carefully,” and the fourth is to “fight with every fiber of your being and with dignity.” When you face challenges, health or otherwise, fight. Never give up. Fight till your last breath. This disease is slowly taking away my body, but it will never take away my spirit,” he continued.
“Billie and Georgia, you are my heart. You are everything to me. Good night. I love you. These are my last words,” Dane said at the end of the interview.
Billie and Georgia, Eric Dane's daughters with actress Rebecca Gayheart, are 15 and 14 respectively.
