The operating block and the ATI section of the largest motherhood in the country, not renovated for over 40 years, have been rehabilitated and equipped by Save the children with over 3.6 million euros

Save the children Romania has fully equipped and rehabilitated the operating block, the ATI section and the adjacent spaces of the largest motherhood in the country – the Polizu Maternity – which had not been completely renovated for more than 40 years. With a total investment of over 3,600,000 euros, they were rehabilitated and equipped with state-of-the-art equipment: the intensive care unit, the operating block and the Obstetrics-Gynecology section of the Polizu Maternity.
The operating block and the ATI section had no longer benefited from complex and complete modernization works for over four decades.
Complex renovations
During the total investment of over 3,600,000 euros, an electric generator with a capacity of 630 kVA was purchased, which can support the entire activity of the hospital in case of electric damage, as well as the latest medical equipment.
“This major intervention means modern treatment conditions, safety for patients and medical staff, as well as a real progress in the fight against maternal and childhood mortality. The project reflects a collective commitment – of the organization Save the Children, of the Partner Companies, of the Individual Donors and the Community,” said Gabriela Alexandrescu, Executive President of Romania.
The modernization project included the replacement of electrical, thermal and sanitary installations, medical gases, as well as ventilation and air conditioning systems, to ensure a sterile environment suitable for high complexity surgery; Modernization of operating rooms and replacing medical equipment with state -of -the -art. In order to guarantee the safety of the patients, before relocating the activity, revision works were needed in the operating room within the Center of Excellence of Polizu Maternity and the relocation of the blood transfusion unit, which will allow the surgery in optimal conditions during the renovation and modernization works.
The rehabilitation and modernization works were carried out in several stages, as follows:
The first stage
The works at this stage lasted about three months and involved several important aspects. In the first phase, the spaces were released, and then the decoration and hygiene of the surfaces, as well as the decommissioning of the existing installations, were achieved. In total, the walls and ceilings were discovered on an area of 2,394 square meters.
All surfaces were cleaned with water and steam at a pressure of 10 bar, followed by their sanitation by applying special substances. Also, about 100 cubic meters of waste were evacuated. As for the installations, 130 linear meters of sanitary pipe, 42 radiators and 150 linear steel pipes, within the thermal installation were decommissioned.
The second stage
This stage included works to arrange the surfaces (walls, ceilings, floor), replace all the installations (electrical, sanitary, thermal, oxygen detection, fire alarm), works for the ventilation system, works mounting and PVC carpet in all spaces.
The third stage included the equipment and furniture: for the 3 operating rooms, 6 consoles were purchased and mounted, 3 scialithic lamps, a specific furniture, customized according to the dimensions and needs of the hospital, were mounted nine oxygen ramps, a nursed type system was purchased by the medical person.
“It was a complex, but deeply necessary intervention. As the works went forward, we discovered new needs – some urgent, some vital for the safety of mothers and their children. We had to find solutions quickly, to mobilize additional resources, so that these essential sections – where serious oncological cases are treated and where you can get on the world. The care they deserve, and each child will have a real chance at life. ”explained Gabriela Alexandrescu, executive president of the organization Save the Children.
“The modernization of the sections, the technological advances that involve performing equipment and delicate procedures, life savior, doubled by the professionalism of the passionate and dedicated medical team, are vital to the little patients and for our patients. Toader Daniela Oana.
Complex cases redirected to other hospitals during renovation
Throughout the implementation of the extended renovation project of the operating block and ATI, the activity within them was carried out in the operating room within the Center of Excellence of Polizu Maternity, where only small interventions were performed, such as hysteroscopies, electro-resorts with diatermic handle, biopsy curettas, mammary punctures, etc.
Obstetric and gynecological cases with complex pathology, as well as those with aggravation potential – pregnancies with placental pathology of placenta, increte, percreta; maternal disorders associated with pregnancy with aggravation potential that requires intensive care; extrauterine tasks; abortions with gestational age over 12 weeks; Gynecological pathology: abundant metrorrhagia, complicated uterine fibromatosis, genital neoplasms – have been redirected to other sanitary units.
These works have included the repair of the modular compartmentalization system of the operating room, the periodic technical check of the two trilux two -arms, checking the functionality of the automatic SHD door, the operating table, as well as the replacement of the filters needed for the ventilation.
Annually, doctors perform about 3,200 interventions in the operating block from Polizu, of which over 1,200 are major interventions, with a high degree of complexity. Thus, in the Intensive Care section and the operating block reach about 5,000 patients for complex surgery, from increased risk to pathologies in the oncological sphere annually.
The section that treats 2,200 patients annually
Annually, over 2,200 patients are treated in the obstetrics-gynecology (septic), of which about 660 are transferred from other sections of the hospital, and almost a third come from the rural area.
Within the project, renovation works were carried out in 11 salons that involved interventions such as: cleaning the walls and making paints, replacing the electrical installation, precabal and panic button, new ramps for medical gases, restoring the sanitary groups and the sanitary installation.
Neonatology, equipped with complex equipment
Annually, Polizu Maternity cares about 3,000 newborns, of which 10-11% are premature, being cases with weights under 1,200 g. In 2023, the smallest premature that survived only 540 grams at birth. The survival of these extremely vulnerable patients depends largely on the existence of adequate medical equipment, to support their vital functions and to compensate for the immaturity of their fragile organs and systems.
International studies confirm a direct correlation between medical equipment and the premature survival rate, which ranges from 10% in the absence of resources to over 90% in well -equipped units, with access to advanced therapies. Ensuring an optimal quality of life for these newborns involves adapted medical care, minimally invasive and offered on time. Thus, a series of high-performance equipment were purchased: parenteral solutions mixing device, 20 resuscitation ball kits, laminar flow hood, monitoring device, ultrasound, neonatal fan, mobile radiology apparatus and a transcutaneous monitor.
Between 2010-2024, the organization Save the children involved in the renovation, modernization and equipment with performing equipment in sections of 130 hospitals-neonatology sections, neonatal intensive care, pediatrics and obstetrics, from all counties of the country, investing over 15 million euros. Over 1,900 equipment have supported and facilitated the treatment of over 260,000 children.
