A foreign cardinal who came to the Vatican consumed the entire minibar of the room where he was staying, believing that it is free. Remained disappointed when he saw the payment note

An unique event took place in the house of Santa Marta in the Vatican, where the cardinals met these days for pre-conclav meetings, before the choice of the new Pope. A foreign cardinal consumed with several colleagues all the alcoholic beverages in the minibar of his room, believing they are free.

The story was reported by Archbishop Anselmo Guido Pecoraru for Corriere della Sera. According to Pecorari, a foreign cardinal, recently arrived in Rome, has consumed with several colleagues all the alcoholic beverages in the minibar of his room, believing they are offered free of charge, writes Antena 3 CNN.

“He is a stranger, he thought everything was free.”explained the archbishop, adding that “He cannot say the name of the protagonist because he is a friend dear to him, but a foreign cardinal who believed that everything was free invited a few colleagues to talk after dinner and thus, shortly, all the drinks from the minibar have finished.”

The surprise came the next day, when the cardinal discovered that all the products consumed had been passed on the payment note. In fact, although the Santa Marta House has a special Vatican status, it works according to rules similar to a hotel, and the consumption in minibar is paid at the end of the stay.

During this period, both official meetings of Pre-Conclav congregations, as well as informal discussions between cardinals, meant to help outline the profile of the future Pope.

Archbishop Pecorari explained that such discussions “It takes place better outside the residence, at the restaurant, where the atmosphere is more relaxed and more away from indiscreet ears.”

The first official meeting of the conclave is scheduled for May 7.
