In Poland, the median age has increased to almost 43 years. According to the latest Worlddata data, it gives us the 33rd place in the world. By 2050, the median age can increase with us up to almost 52 years.

Polish society is getting old more and more. This process has been constantly progressing for several decades, which is related to, among others with a small natural increase. According to prof. Tomasz Zdrojewski, head of the Prevention and Didactics Department of the Medical University of Gdańsk, the median age in our country in 1955 was 25.2 years. We were then young society: the population exceeded only 27 million, and there were 3,56 children statistically for one family. In terms of population, we took 19th place in the world.
“In 1990, the median century increased with us to 31.4 years, and there were two children for one family,” says the specialist. However, the population in our country was still increasing – in 1990 it increased to 38 million. However, for the next 30 years she remained at a similar level, and recently began to fall.
According to the preliminary data of the Central Statistical Office, there were almost 37.5 million population in our country at the end of 2024. In terms of population, we currently occupy the 41st place in the world. Since 2012, a decrease in population has been maintained, which is mainly affected by a natural increase, which has been negative since 2013.
The median age increases systematically. According to Worlddata, in 2025 it increased in our country to 42.9 years. On average, 1,31 children are on one family.
It gives us the 33rd place in the world. Behind us is Slovakia (median age 42.8) and Canada (42.6), and there are countries such as the Czech Republic (44.2), Switzerland (44.2) and Hungary (44.8). The first place in the world is taken by: Monaco from the median age dating back to 56.9 years, Japan (49.9) and Italy (48.4).
The median age for the whole world is currently 31 years, while in the European Union it is almost 45 years. Within 10 years from 2014 to 2024, it increased by 2.2 years in the EU. However, the range in this respect between individual countries – from 39.4 to 48.4 years is large. Individual Union countries are aging at a different rate. In the last 10 years, the median century has increased the fastest in Greece, Italy, Portugal and Slovakia – by 4 years. In the next places there are countries such as Cyprus, Spain and Poland, where the median age increased by 3.8 years.
Forecasts about our country are even more disturbing. According to the data presented by prof. Zdrojewski in 2050 Median century in Poland may increase up to 51.8 years. The population with current trends can drop to 32 million, which would give us the 59th place in the world.
