Who are the presidential candidates who will sign a statement “for a democratic and Euro -Atlantic”. Initiative of the University of Bucharest

Several presidential candidates will sign on Thursday, April 24, a “Declaration for keeping the Euro -Atlantic orientation of Romania and the values of democratic society”, in the Balcony of the University of Bucharest.

The representatives of the University of Bucharest have announced that they will take part in signing the document Nicuşor Dan, Victor Ponta, Lavinia Şandru, George Simion or Elena Lasconi. Crin Antonescu, the candidate of the PSD-PNL-UDMR coalition, would not be among those who will sign the statement, it appears from the announcement of the University of Bucharest, according to Agerpres.
The initiative of signing the declaration was launched by the University of Bucharest (UB) in the call for a democratic and Euro -Atlantic Romania, on April 16.
Thus, the representatives of the University of Bucharest, of the Association “December 21, 1989”, as well as the seniors of the Student League, asked all the candidates for the presidential elections to sign, in the antechamber of the Balcony of the University.
– will contribute to maintaining in the collective memory of the spirit of the 1989 revolution and of the University Market, as a fundamental moral and political landmark for Romanian democracy;
– will ensure the maintenance of the principles of the rule of law and will ensure the respect of the Constitution of Romania, in its letter and spirit;
– they will guarantee the fair and unbroken settlement, according to the ECHR decisions, of the files on recent history from 1945 to 1990, the indescribable crimes of communism, December 1989, June 13 – 15, 1990;
– they will unequivocally assert the commitment to Romania's belonging to the European Union and NATO, as well as for the strategic partnership with the US;
– they will undoubtedly support the real autonomy of the universities, in the plan of academic freedom, but also of adequate financing, advancing their strategic role in the development of the Romanian society;
– they will guarantee the freedom to express citizens, non -governmental organizations and civil society in general, recognizing their essential contribution to the construction of a democratic public space;
– they will use all their presidential prerogatives so that those guilty of crimes and inhuman treatments, before and after 1989, are brought before justice;
– they will act constantly to reduce the faults within the Romanian society, institutional transparency and permanent dialogue between state institutions and society.
The statement is open for signing on Thursday, between 10:00 and 16:00, in the University Balcony (Faculty of Geography). The signing is done in the presence of the rector of the University of Bucharest, prof. Univ. dr. Marian Preda.
