Zelensky comments on U.S. sanctions against Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his views following the recent passage of significant sanctions by the U.S. House of Representatives against Russia, noting the timing coincided with a new wave of missile attacks from Russia, which targeted Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure. The assaults reportedly affected eight regions, leading to considerable damage.
As negotiations around an energy truce progressed, Russian forces launched attacks on energy facilities in the Sumy and Odesa regions. Strikes also hit residential buildings in Kyiv and Odesa, resulting in injuries to over ten individuals, including children. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, as of 9:33 AM, at least 18 people had been reported injured in the capital.
“The bill proposed by Lindsey Graham, along with other strong sanctions against the sources of this war, particularly Russia, represents an exceptionally powerful tool capable of stopping this terrorist war and compelling Russia to establish peace,” Zelensky stated. He emphasized that robust sanctions are crucial for the success of diplomatic efforts for peace, notably those involving the U.S., Europe, and other allies.
Zelensky thanked members of the House of Representatives, Senators, and Congressional leaders for their support of the bill while reiterating the necessity for Russia to end its aggression.

- The bill introduces sanctions against Russian officials and grants the U.S. President the authority to impose a 500% tariff on Russian oil, gas, petroleum products, petrochemicals, and coal imported to the U.S. It also includes secondary 100% tariffs on countries importing Russian oil and gas or aiding in sanction evasion, limited to five years.
