The Ministry of Defense in the UK has successfully tested a new type of electronic weapon to combat drones. The system is mounted on trucks and uses a high -power radio frequency, to deactivate or “fries” from a long distance the electronic systems of the drones.
The system called RapidDestroyer was designed by a consortium led by the French defense conglomerate Thales.
Two eight drones were neutralized by the new weapon, in a recently performed test, the British Ministry of Defense announced. Overall, in all the tests done, over 100 drones were destroyed.
The technology is still in the incipient phase, but it could also have implications in Ukraine battles, where the large number of small and cheap drones is a difficult target for conventional systems.
The new electromagnetic technology emits a large energy beam, capable of neutralizing several drones simultaneously. Experts say this weapon is effective against drone swarms, but is less suitable for infrastructure defense, such as airports.
About the system you can read on the Thales Group website, that of the British government, but also on armyrecognition.com.
What the company Thales says
Thales announces that British Army has successfully conducted tests of the RapidDestroyer system, for neutralizing two drones.
The tests took place in a secure location, where the army team intercepted the drones, as part of a simulated threat scenario, being the first such tests.
RapidDestroyer has been developed by a consortium led by Thales and uses radio frequency to disrupt and damage the sensitive and electronic drone components. Thus, the drone is subjected to a “hard Kill elimination” mechanism that stops in advance and annihilates the threat. “
