The US Education Department announced on Monday that, starting May 5, it will resume the recovery of student debts from people who have not paid their federal loans after a break over five years, according to Reuters.
The measure targets over 5 million persons unable to pay, according to the institution. Another 4 million debtors have delays, but have not yet reached the inability to pay.
The recovery of the student debts was suspended in 2020, as part of the support package granted in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic and the economic uncertainties caused by it.
In the next two weeks, all the debtors who are unable to pay emails from the Federal Aid Office for Students, through which they will be informed about the following steps. Starting in the summer, the department will send notifications for detention from salaries, through the forced execution mechanism.
The policies of forgiveness of the student debts promoted by the Biden administration have faced opposition from the Republicans and with obstacles in the court.
Student Borrower Protection Organization criticized the Decision of the Trump Administration, warning that the resumption of collections comes in a moment of economic instability, marked by increasing costs and recent dismissions in the public sector.
“The announcement comes at a time when Americans are facing unprecedented economic uncertainty,” the organization said.
