Zelenski accuses Russia of “nuclear terrorism”: “It brings the world to the brink of disaster again”

President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of “nuclear terrorism” on the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident and called on the world to stop allowing “irresponsible attacks” by Russian forces.
“The world must not allow this nuclear terrorism to continue, and the best way to end it is to force Russia to stop its irresponsible attacks,” Zelenskiy said.
“Forty years ago, the world faced one of the worst nuclear disasters – the explosion of reactor number four of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. A significant amount of radioactive material was released. For years, hundreds of thousands of people have been dealing with the consequences of that tragedy,” the Ukrainian president wrote on X.
To limit the radiation, a concrete sarcophagus was built over the destroyed reactor, and later, with the help of 40 countries, it was covered with a protective shell to prevent further disasters.
“These two structures are what protect against radioactive emissions and contamination. Their maintenance and protection is in everyone's interest. But with the war it is waging, Russia is again bringing the world to the brink of a man-made disaster – Russian-Iranian “shaheds” regularly fly over the plant, and one of them hit the protective shell last year,” Zelenskiy charged.
“The world must not allow this nuclear terrorism to continue, and the best way is to force Russia to stop its reckless attacks,” he added.
“We commemorate all those who gave their lives while dealing with the consequences of this tragedy. May all victims of the Chernobyl disaster rest in peace,” Zelenskiy said.
