“At the same time, we estimate that the first electronic identity cards will be in possession of the citizens who have their domicile in Bucharest starting May 12, 2025”add May.

The option to request an electronic identity card can be expressed at any time by the holder, regardless of the validity period of the current identity document, writes Agerpres.

It also estimates that, until the completion of the extension of the issuance at national level of the electronic identity card, the deadline for solving the request and the issuance will have an average of 10 days, following which after the operation of the whole country, the waiting period to issue the electronic identity document will be diminished.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the completion of the technical activities by extending the issuance of the electronic identity card at national level, the citizen will be able to opt for issuing an electronic identity card or requesting the issuance of a simple identity card that will not contain electronic storage support (CIP) and which will be put into circulation in the last month of May 2025.

Costs to release those

The first electronic identity card is issued free of charge for Romanian citizens starting at the age of 14, within the limits of the funds provided by the National Plan of Redress and Resilitis (PNRR).

Subsequently, in order to request the issuance of another electronic identity card, the citizen will pay a fee of 67 lei.

Also, for issuing the simple identity card (CIS) the applicant will pay a fee worth 38 lei.

The main benefits of those

– standardized size, similar to bank cards, according to European norms

– Advanced Security Elements, which provide protection against falsification and identity theft

– the possibility of using as a travel document

– easy access to electronic services and the possibility of use for electronic signature.

The following phases of extension

According to May, in the next two months, those will be available at national level, through the community public services for the records of persons.

From June 2025, they will be able to obtain the electronic identity card and children under 14 years old. In their case, those will be used as a travel document, as well as to establish identity in administrative procedures (a solution more efficient than using the birth certificate).

Starting with May 20, 2025, simple identity cards (CIS) will also be issued, which do not contain electronic storage support.
