Over one million Romanians celebrate their onomastics of Saint Gheorghe, symbol of the leader, the fearless fighter and the martyr who did not betray his faith.

Saint George is considered one of the most popular and beloved holy martyrs from all over the world, with the large number of people who bear his name.

According to the General Directorate for the Evidence of Persons, the most common names of men are: Gheorghe (402.099); George (159,761); Georgian (29,408); Gheorghiţă (21,434); Georgel (12,285); Gigi (8,659); Gigel (5.821); Georgică (5.116).

Of the women who celebrate their names of Sf. Gheorghe, most of them are called: Georgiana (155,949); Georgeta (114.809); Gheorghiţa (24.212); Gina (21,167); Geta (14,489); Gherghina (14,293); Giorgiana (10,374); Gica (5.843).

Saint Martyr Gheorghe/George was born in Cappadocia, in the 2nd century, in a Christian family, during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. He enlisted in the Roman army and, traveling the military hierarchy, St. George was noted for the skill with which he was weapons.

Despite the decree against Christians, issued by Diocletian in 303, St. George chose to publicly confess his Christian faith. On an imperial order, the saint was imprisoned and subjected to torture to renounce his faith. As he rejected the emperor's offer to grant high honors in exchange for renunciation of Christianity, Diocletian ordered the murder by beheading St. George on April 23.

This day is accompanied by numerous popular habits, kept mainly in the rural area.
