Against the background of tensions in Ukraine, when there were mutual accusations of non -compliance with a partial cessation agreement, American emissary Steve Witkoff is going to make a new visit to Russia, during the consultations on the white house for the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, Agerpres reports.
The information was confirmed by Russian President Vladimir Putin's counselor for international business Iuri Usakov, who to the question of journalists about a new American emissary visit: “We are waiting for him”.
The fourth visit to Russia within four months of Steve Witkoff takes place shortly after US President Donald Trump promised that he would soon present details about his peace plan, saying that they will be made public “in the next three days”.
Diplomatic sources indicated that, in the case of an agreement, it could be taken into account the development of European peace forces in Ukraine, despite the firm opposition manifested by Vladimir Putin so far.
The latest meeting between Donald Trump's emissary and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the third, was April 11, at St. Petersburg, following Steve Witkoff saying in an interview that “territorial problem” could be one of the keys to a possible peace agreement. In reply, Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski has remained firmly in position and said that Ukraine will never recognize the annexation of its territories by Russia.
During this last discussion, Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that, in the absence of progress in the coming weeks, the US could decide to withdraw from the diplomatic process.
In this context, under the pressure of Washington, Russian President Vladimir Putin said a 30-hour Easter armistice, accepted by Kiev, but the two parties accused each other of violating fire.
Although the struggles decreased in intensity on certain segments of the front, the confrontations resumed immediately after Easter, so Volodimir Zelenski proposed to expand the armistice by another 30 days, to protect the civil infrastructure.
Vladimir Putin's declared disposition to consider such a proposal has fueled speculation on any direct negotiation between Moscow and Kiev. However, the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, stressed that for such direct discussions to take place Zelenski should revoke the decree issued in 2022, which officially prohibits negotiations with the current Kremlin leader.
While the US emissary is expected in Russia this week, Ukraine continues to be the target of Russian attacks on civilian areas.
On Tuesday, April 22, President Zelenski condemned the new bombings launched on the cities of Kharkov, Zaporojie and Odessa, appealing again for a humanitarian armistice.
“Our proposal to stop the attacks on civil infrastructure remains valid”, he transmitted on social networks.
In Zaporojie, a woman lost her life as a result of a sliding bombshell attack, which injured about 20 people, and several civilians were injured following a drone attack. Also, the city of Odessa was targeted on Monday night by a massive Kamikaze drone attack, which caused the injury of at least eight people and an extended fire in a populated neighborhood.
