The driver with 29 years of work experience was dismissed by the Kyoto authorities, when on a safety camera installed on the bus was recorded a case of cheating passengers for the sum of 1000 yen (6 euros) in 2022.

When he was refused the payment of retirement severance pay, the man referred the case to court. The court of first instance ruled against his disadvantage, but in the appeal the court found that he was punished in a disproportionate manner.

Finally, on Thursday, the Supreme Court upheld the court's decision. He decided that the driver's behavior could undermine the trust of the population in the public transport management system.

The camera registered a situation when a group of five passengers got on the bus, who should pay a total of 1150 yen for the journey. The driver then asked them to throw 150 yen into the box and accepted the 1000-yen banknote, but did not include it in the settlement.

Although this scene was recorded, the driver – previously chased for several other incidents – in an interview with his supervisor tried to deny the facts.

“Every bus driver works alone and is dealing with public money. We treated this case as embezzlement,” said a representative of the Public Transport Office at Kyoto Shinichi Hirai on Friday. (PAP)
