A 14 -year -old girl was killed on Saturday by a lion on the outskirts of the capital Kenyene Nairobi, the country's wild animal service (KWS) announced on Sunday, according to AFP.

The incident took place on a farm to the south of Nairobi National Park. Another teenager was a witness to the attack and gave the alarm, KWS said in a statement.

“The KWS rangers and the intervention teams responded quickly and found blood spots leading to the Mbagathi River, where the girl's body was found with wounds in the lower back. The lion was not seen on the spot,” the Kenyan service added.

The teams are researching the area and a trap has been installed in an attempt to capture the animal.

The service added that a 54 -year -old man was also killed on Friday by an elephant in Nyeri County in the center of the country.

“KWS sends sincere condolences to the bereaved families and continues to collaborate closely with law enforcement and local communities to increase the safety of people near protected areas for wild animals,” KWS said.

He appealed to several investments in “alleviating conflicts between humans and wild animals”, pleading for the installation of warning systems and greater collaboration with local communities.
