People's calendar
Rodion with ice
On this day, the Orthodox Church remembers the Holy Herodion – the Apostle from seventy.
The people of St. Rodion (Herodion) were known as the name of the ice leaf, because at that time ice is actively breaking and melting. He was observed and made certain forecasts for the future. For example, it was believed that if the ice on the river becomes piles, then there would be piles.
It was also said that on this day the sun meets a month. In the fall, in the first frosts, two luminaries diverge in different directions: one to the east, the other to the west, and they are no longer seen until spring. When meeting Rodionov, the sun and a month tell each other news, and it happens that they will quarrel. If the meeting turns out “good”, that is, with a clear sun and a bright day, then the summer will be good. The “thin” meeting, which is accompanied by fog and cloudy sky, worships bad summer.
On this day, it was possible to start plowing. So they said: “Rodion brought water, put the plow of the oats.” This work was not easy, but it had to be carried out carefully, without lazy. The peasants knew: “In the arable land, the flaws are in the pocket of the gaps”; “To plow deeper – chew more bread”; “Do not bother – do not be urged with bread”; “To plow and harrow – do not speak the hour”; “Though the mud of muffle is a sword of swords.”
By the way, about when you need to sow oats, there were different signs. It was believed that it was necessary to proceed to the sowing when the frog shouts, either when the moles begin to leave the holes, or when the leaves bloom and oak bloom. Sowing oats continued until apple trees and pears bloomed.
