Pope Francis received on Sunday, during a short meeting, on the US Vice -President JD Vance, on the occasion of Easter holiday, despite the fact that a meeting was not officially scheduled, the Vatican said.
The meeting comes about two months after the Sovereign Pontiff expressed criticism of the immigration policy promoted by the Donald Trump administration.
The private dialogue took place around 11:30 (local time), at the Santa Marta residence in Vatican, where the Pope lives. According to a statement sent by the Vatican on Telegram, the discussion lasted only a few minutes and it was the occasion of an exchanging Easter wishes between the two officials, notes Agerpres.
US Secretary JD Vance participated with his wife and the three children at the service of Friday, dedicated to the passions of the Lord, in the Basilica of Saint Peter, a ceremony to which the Pope did not take part.
Converted to Catholicism in 2019, JD Vance is associated with the ultra -conservative wing of the Catholic Church, known for the criticisms of the reforming direction promoted by Pope Francis.
During his three -day visit to Italy, JD Vance was received at the Vatican on Saturday morning by the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and during the same day he had a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni.
