Nicuşor Dan, an independent candidate for the presidential elections, believes that the Romanian state has lost “categorically” the fight with drugs and says that, if he is elected president, he will insist in two directions to combat the phenomenon of drug use.
The general mayor of the capital was asked, in the Insider Political show, broadcast on Prima TV on Saturday, how the drug phenomenon will fight if the President of Romania arrives.
“(…) On this issue of drug use are directions. One: the sanctions for traffickers must be tightened, not for consumers, as unfortunately the Romanian state goes at this time. And when we talk about traffickers, we must also talk about DIICOT, we must also talk about services to go to the phenomenon,”
Nicușor Dan also spoke about the creation of new centers for addicts.
“And further, we suffer to the centers for dependent people, who are not sufficient to the extent of the phenomenon, I speak of Romania as a whole. And we also suffer exactly what I said earlier, in modern, contemporary methods to prevent. If we talk about this addiction to children, we must go to the root of the phenomenon. Parents, let's see how we can do to create some ecosystems in which they can find each other, ”explained Nicuşor Dan.
The general mayor was also asked if the Romanian village lost the fight with drugs, as the Interior Minister Cătălin Predoiu said. “Until the moment, categorically, yes,” said Nicuşor Dan.
In August 2023, the Minister of the Interior, Cătălin Predoiu, said that “the battle with drugs in the adult category is lost”, and the priority is “saving the young generation”.
The Interior Minister was contradicted at that time by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu: “I do not agree with the idea that the state has lost the battle with drugs. This fight will only be lost when we abandon it. And we do not have this right. We cannot close the eyes and see how more lives are destroyed and more of the family,”
