Uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto. Celebrations in the capital
In Warsaw, the commemoration ceremony of the 82nd anniversary of the outbreak of the uprising in the ghetto began at 12 from the outbreak of alarm sirens. The main part of the ceremony at the monument to the Heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto was attended by representatives of the Jewish community, veterans, righteous among the nations, representatives of state and local authorities, diplomats, representatives of Polish cultural institutions and residents of the capital.
On April 19, 1943, 2,000 The Germans entered the ghetto to finally eliminate them. Several hundred young people from underground Jewish Combat Organization (ŻOB) and the Jewish Military Association (ŻZW) opposed them. The insurgents under the command of Mordechaj Anielewicz were exhausted and poorly armed. Many knew that they had no chance, but they preferred to die in a fight to save their dignity.
Other residents of the ghetto, about 50,000 civilians for many weeks were hiding in hideouts and bunkers. Their resistance was just as important as the one with a weapon in hand. For many days they remained elusive – they went underground and did not comply with the German orders. For four weeks, the Germans equated the ghetto with the ground, burning the house around the house. The captured they killed or transported to the extermination camps.
