Four people died and one is seriously injured after a cable car crashed near Naples on southern Italy, said mountain rescue services and firefighters, Reuters reports, according to News.ro.
The accident took place at Monte Faito, a peak located about 45 kilometers southeast of Naples.
“The cabin on the peak has collapsed,” wrote on Facebook Umberto de Gregorio, the president of the Public Transport Company EAV, who manages the cable car, calling the event “a tragedy”.
Several reports in the Italian press claim that one of the cables that supported the cabin broke.
Sixteen passengers were helped to get out of the cable car that stopped in the air near the foot of the mountain. They were evacuated one by one, with the help of harnesses, as shown by the images broadcast by the public television RAI and other means of information.
Vincenzo de Luca, the head of the Campania region, told RAI that the rescue operations were difficult by the fog and the strong wind.
In 2021, 14 people died in Italy when a cable car that connected the north of Lake Maggiore and a nearby mountain.
