The plans of the construction of a new stadium in Hunedoara have been announced since 2017, and the investment estimated at about 65 million euros, is in the design phase.

Have not demolished the old stadium

In May, Hunedoara City Hall announced that the old Corvin stadium (video) will be demolished to make room for the new complex, which would have entered the site this year.

“The new Stadium in Hunedoara enters a straight line. The National Investment Company issued the Order to start (more precisely, the design), within the contract signed on April 15, 2025, with the association of construction companies Erbașu – PAB Romania – New RPC 321”Inform, in May 2025, Hunedoara City Hall.

The design term is six months, and the works were to be completed in 2027, according to the project.

However, the authorities in Hunedoara took precautionary measures and did not start demolition of the old stadium in Hunedoara.

The austerity measures announced by the Romanian Government have placed in an uncertain situation the investment in the new sports complex in Hunedoara, considered to be the largest infrastructure project carried out in the municipality of Hunedoara, from 1990 to the present.

The revolt of the mayor of Hunedoara

Dan Bobouțanu, the mayor of Hunedoara, argues that the new stadium in Hunedoara is not a moft, but a moral obligation of the Romanian Government to Hunedoara.

“The current government of Romania begins a” shock therapy “which, in my opinion, is not necessary. However, I cannot go beyond the fact that the Hunedoara Stadium, after years of efforts made by me and the president of CJ Laurenciiu Nistor, is “on break” only to make the calculations on the budget deficit. He is the only stadium promised by the Government of Romania in the historical Transylvania and the only major investment of the National Investment Company in Hunedoara, the county from which the story of the Romanian people starts ”, says Mayor Dan Bobouțanu, in a message on his Facebook page.

He invites the parliamentarians from Hunedoara County to publicly declare their support for this investment and to explain to the prime minister that this project is not a moft.

“I do not want to believe that Hunedoara is, again, abandoned by the Government. It was once, in the 1990s and early 2000s, when the whole Government of Romania” solved “the problem of economic transition through total indifference, causing a true economic and social cataclysm precisely in the county and the city that, in the 70s and '80s, was the most important of Romania. The contribution to the gross domestic product (Hunedoara was, at one point, right 2nd, after the Bucharest – Ilfov area). After 1990 … Only we know what we went through, everyone ”, says the mayor.

Dan Bobouțanu adds that he did not ask for money for salary for the town hall nor for local investments.

“We did it through our own forces. We asked for a stadium. So much! A simple stadium would be a pale consolation for all the suffering that the Romanian governments subjected to Hunedoara for decades. Not even a minimal moral repair is in the state of Romania? ”, Says the mayor.

According to the builders, the new Corvin Stadium, will be built instead of the current stadium, built in the late 1950s. The complex will have a total area of 37,207 square meters and a capacity of 10,100 places. It will have a height regime S+P+3E and will comply with the standards of the UEFA 4 category, being prepared to host European competitions. The new construction will include a boxing room, strength and cardio rooms, modern showers with showers, medical office, conference rooms, a restaurant and administrative spaces. Also, exterior areas for promenade and events will be arranged, as well as parking for spectators and personal.
