“How many young doctors should we die to wake up?” Doctors react after the deaths of the two residents in Iasi

The causes of the two deaths at the Institute of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the “Saint Spiridon” Hospital are not clear and there are indications of pre -existing conditions, at least in one of the young doctors. However, the cases made many well-known doctors from Iasi and not only to draw alarm on the Burnout, a big problem that the guild faces.
- “This tragedy is the peak of an iceberg of suffering and silent exhaustion, worn by thousands of resident doctors in Romania,” the doctor from Iasi Răzvan Socolov reacted.
- “I cannot help but wonder: how much silent suffering do we tolerate in hospitals? How many doctors should be lost in” unclear conditions “until we understand that we have a substantive problem,” the doctor Gabriela Paula Florea asks.
- The Minister of Health, Alexandru Rafila, said on Tuesday that the burnout in the medical system is generated by the insufficiency of human resources in certain areas and specialties.
- The head of the Territorial Labor Inspectorate Iași, Costel Grojdea, told HotNews.ro that the institution was self -identified and started the procedures of a background control at Saint Spiridon Iași Hospital.
The death of the two resident doctors from the Institute of Gastroenterology and Hepatology from the “Saint Spiridon” Hospital, one week away from each other, marked the medical guild in Romania. In the online environment, several well -known doctors reacted to this tragedy, signaling the problems in the system.
“How many young doctors do we have to die to wake up? Because this tragedy is the tip of a silent iceberg and exhaustion, worn by thousands of resident doctors in Romania,” the well -known doctor from Iasi Răzvan Socolov draws.
The data presented by him, citing the Romanian College of Physicians, respectively the MedLife Medical Barometer, shows that 36% of Romanian doctors suffer from Burnout, and 58% of doctors under 35 take into account emigration, not due to wages, but of overload and lack of respect.
“The exhaustion kills. Silence hides the mute cry of despair. Compassion should unite us, doctors and patients together. It is time to talk seriously about the health of those who save our lives. Without a system that protects their young doctors, we cannot talk about a future in health. I still make 24 hours followed by the normal 6 -hour program, and the guards are unpaid. “That is why I come back so hard at home,” adds the doctor Răzvan Socolov.
“Effects of a competitive spirit cultivated from the faculty ”
The tragedy in Iași is not only a huge loss, but also a silent cry of a system that neglects its own people, is also the doctor Gabriela Paula Florea.
“I cannot help but wonder: how much silent suffering do we tolerate in hospitals? How many doctors should be lost in” unclear conditions “until we understand that we have a substantive problem-of organizational culture, of empathy, of emotional support and balance-life? Faculty, in which only the one who gives the most – often until the exhaustion – is the one who “succeeds” and, once that or those have succeeded, with great sacrifices, the others are expected to do the same.
In her opinion, it is not just about Burnout, but “about sense, about recognition, a system that requires infinite and offers too little. Doctors are not invincible. They are people. And their humanity must be protected, not exhausted, in order to offer, in their turn, empathy and compassion for those who are suffering.”
Minister Rafila: “I understand they had certain conditions. I do not know their medical situation”
Present at the launch of the “Guide for Local Actions: Solutions for human resources in health”, made within the National Plan of Redress and Resility, the Minister of Health, Alexandru Rafila, said on Tuesday that the Burnout is generated by the insufficiency of human resources in certain areas and in certain specialties.
Asked about the case of the two resident doctors from the Institute of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Iasi, aged 28 and 31, who died at about two weeks, Rafila replied:
“I do not know the situation closely, I understand that they had certain conditions. I do not know their medical situation. It remains to be seen with the College of Physicians if there is a relationship between the way they carried out their activity, possibly overload, and this unfortunate evolution.”
ITM Iași, in control at Saint Spiridon Iasi Hospital
The chief inspector of the Territorial Labor Inspectorate Iași, Costel Grojdea, said for HotNews.ro that the institution was self -identified in this case, following the press articles.

The Rector of UMF Iași: “Not all can be doctors”
The rector of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Grigore T. Popa” from Iași, prof.dr. Luminița Iancu who coordinates the activity of residents at the University, is of the opinion that “not all can be doctors”.
“It is also stress, there can be much better conditions, but a broader discussion, which involves the existence of more people at the support: nurses, stretches. For now, we as a university cannot get involved here. There are over 3,000 residents in Iasi, they all have problems, not all can be doctors, but from here to say that they are very much. Unfortunately, there are health problems that are ignored ”, of Prof.dr. Luminița Iancu, for Ziarul de Iași.
The causes of the death of the two residents are not known exactly. The first medical conclusions indicate certain pre -existing conditions.
In the case of the 28 -year -old doctor, prof.dr. Diana Cimpoieșu, the head of SMURD Iași, said that he was undergoing treatment for tuberculostatic medication, because he had been contact with a person with tuberculosis. The police in Iasi opened an investigation in this case.
