Scientists in Shanghai created a hyperrealist digital copy of this Chinese metropolis with an accuracy of below 3 cm, which will allow the police to navigate the police and virtual access to premises and related data in real time – said the daily South China Morning Post.

The “Virtual Shanghai” system, developed by the Shanghai Institute of Geodesy and Mapping and one of the laboratories of the Ministry of Natural Resources, combines laser scans from the air, Lidar (technology for detecting and measuring distance using light) and 3D modeling – explains “SCMP”.
To create a city, drones, vehicles and sensors mounted on backpacks, which were mapped, metro tunnels and underground installations using artificial intelligence algorithms to analyze the collected data.
The officers can “enter” the buildings virtually, browsing the plans of the floors, tenants' registers and installations.

In extraordinary situations, the police may “impose” real -time data, from street cameras and social media to virtual roads, creating a lively replica of the city, which is to allow precise reacting of relevant services.
The daily points out that the system uses the Unreal Engine mechanism, a tool for creating 3D games, and the “Virtual Shanghai” itself resembles Grand Theft Auto (GTA) games – says the journal.
The creators of the system did not reveal details regarding the security of personal data.
According to the Shanghai Public Security Bureau, in 2024 the number of crimes in the city fell by 13.8 percent. compared to the previous year.
