A bomb exploded on Friday in front of the headquarters in Athens Al Hellenic Train, the company involved in the worst railway in the history of Greece, which took place in 2023 and resulted in 57 deaths, the Greek police announced.

Police say that the Greek press received anonymous calls by which it was informed about the attack that occurred near one of the busiest highways in the Capital. In the vicinity there are hotels, restaurants and properties to rent for tourists, but no possible victims have been reported.

The Hellenic Train building seemed to be unavailable.

The Greek daily Efsyn and the Zougla news portal, two publications that received anonymous calls, mentioned that the explosive device seems to have been hidden in a closed backpack, which had been placed on a scooter without registration numbers.

According to the police, the team specialized in bombs' defamation arrived at the scene too late to prevent the explosion.

The television of State TV ERT reported that a nearby hotel was previously evacuated.

The attack was similar to the one registered in front of the Ministry of Labor in Greece in February 2024.

Investigation and extensive protests after the railway disaster of February 2023

A passenger train and a freight train collided in Tempe, in the center of Greece, in February 2023, after being allowed to travel on the same line. In total, 57 people died, most students, and the railway accident triggered a wave of strikes and protests in Greece and abroad, including this year.

The railway disaster also led to the formulation of two censure motions, in 2024 and in March 2025, but the conservative government passed with both.

Hellenic Train, an Italian railway operator, denied that he knew that on board the freight train was illegal load, as the families of the victims claim.

In the file were prosecuted over 40 people, including the head of the train officer responsible for directing trains. It is believed that the process will not start earlier than the end of the year.

On Friday, the Parliament of Greece gave the green wave to judge a former deputy minister. The opposition parties accuse Christos Triatopoulos, the official sent to the scene of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis after the railway accident of February 2023, of authorizing the demolition of the bulldozer area, which led to the loss of vital evidence. Triantopoulos deny that he had committed any transgressions and claims that he was only supervising the rescue efforts.

The interurban trains in Greece came under private administration in 2017, when the public operator was privatized and sold to Ferrovie Dello Stato Italian, becoming Hellenic Train.
