Parents of the cubs-the turtles of Mammy and Abrazzo from the island of Santa Cruz are the oldest residents of the zoo, who are about 100 years old. In addition, the female was recognized as one of the most genetically valuable Galapagos turtles according to the program for preserving the species, which is coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). She also became the most adult mother in her form.

Since 2023, Mammy laid in total four laying eggs, the release says. The first three were unsuitable. The turtles hatched from the fourth in November 2024, then the female laid 16 eggs.

It is noted that the first cub was neded on February 27. The zoo team monitors other eggs, from which new lives can also hatch in the near future.

Workers plan to show small turtles on display on April 23-on the 93rd anniversary of Mammy's arrival at the zoo.

Context

Galapagos turtles live in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Ecuador. This is the largest of the existing types of turtles: males can reach a weight of up to 500 pounds (226 kg), and females weigh about 250 pounds on average (113 kg). These cold -blooded animals spend from one to two hours, warming in the sun, after which eight to nine graze on the grass and rest.

According to scientists, the life expectancy of these turtles can be from 100 to 200 years. To date, there are 13 living species that are endemics of the seven islands.
