The support shown to the leader of the far-right French Marine Le Pen by Donald Trump, who stated that he is the victim of a “witch hunter”, represents “an interference”, said in an interview for Le Parisien Dimanche, France Prime Minister François Bayrou, AFP reports.
Invited to comment on the support that Le Pen was shown by Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Viktor Orban, after he forbade him to run for the next elections, François Bayrou said that these three situations should not be “mixed”.
“But I see that, on several continents, some are trying to constitute an international, iliberral, which has decided that human rights, the rule of law, the democratic collaboration between nations must belong to the past,” said the French prime minister.
The leader of the extreme French right and several party colleagues were sentenced Monday in the first instance in a fundraising file, after using the European Parliament's money to pay the salaries of party members in France. Le Pen received four years in prison, two of them with suspension and two under electronic supervision. The decision is not final, but the judge also imposed a prohibition to hold public positions for a period of five years, with immediate execution, which most likely compromises them for the presidential elections of 2027.
From Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini or former Russian president Dmitri Medvedev, several officials reacted to show their support for Le Pen and to criticize the French justice decision.
Among them was Donald Trump, who compared Marine Le Pen's conviction with his own judicial cases in the United States, stating that the Five -year ineligibility of the RN chief is “a very serious matter.”
“Many people believed that he would not be convicted (…) was forbidden to run for five years, and she was the main candidate. It is similar to what was to us, he is very similar to our country,” said Donald Trump, who was himself convicted last year in the case of hidden payments to a porn actress and had more criminal actress.
