The President of Armenia signed the law on the beginning of the process of the country's entry into the EU

The report said that the head of state signed a number of laws, in particular, “on the beginning of the process of entering the Republic of Armenia into the European Union.”

The Armenian government approved the project in January. In February, the country's parliament at the meeting supported the bill, and on March 26 – approved the law.

On February 11, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Paruir Ovanesyan said that the adoption of the bill on the beginning of Armenia entered into the EU is not in itself an application for membership, but consolidates the deepening of bilateral relations, informed Armenpress.

Context

Armenia formally is a member of the organization of the Collective Security Treaty (CSTO), but recently she actually ceased to participate in the events of this association due to the lack of assistance from Armenia from the CSTO countries during the war of Armenia and Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh. In addition, Armenia refused to pay money to the organization last year's budget.

In addition, Armenia is a member of the EAEU, which, in addition to it and the aggressor country of Russia, also includes Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

On February 29, 2024, the speaker of the National Assembly (Parliament) of the country Alain Simonyan said that Armenia does not discuss the likelihood of the country's entry into NATO, but it should be thought of joining the European Union. “Our actions show that we have much higher indicators of democracy than many of our partner countries, which are already members of the European Union. And we are not saying that, our partners in the European Union say this through resolutions and the like,” he said.
