“At this point, I especially remember those whom he hurt during his priesthood. Through their constant pain, let us persevere in our prayers for them and for all victims of sexual abuse,” he called in a statement in Mcelroy.

Theodore McCarrick. What we know about him

McCarrick was one of the highest hierarchs in the church of the priest in connection with accusations of sexual offenses. This happened in 2019, when the church investigation showed that he was guilty of harassment of a 16-year-old minister in the 70s. In the following years, many other accusations appeared to him, and in 2021 the former priest heard criminal charges regarding sexual assault at the 16-year-old during a wedding in Massachustsetts. However, the court found a former priest 91-year-old to be unable to respond to allegations due to his health.

The report, published in 2020, on behalf of Pope Francis showed that rumors and reports of McCarrick's crimes appeared for decades, but this did not prevent him from five in the hierarchy. The allegations against him were rejected, among others by Pope John Paul II, who took him to the Cardinal dignity in 2001.

Ordained a priest in 1958, born in New York McCarrick, he climbed up in the ranks of the American church in the middle and at the end of the 20th century. He was the auxiliary bishop of New York, he led the dioceses to Metuchen and Newark, New Jersey, and eventually became the archbishop of Washington.
