On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the holy martyr Vasily Ankirsky, who lived in the 4th century.
The people received many nicknames, and all of them are associated with the onset of warm and sunny days. Drops are already knocking with might and main, and people said before: “Vasily Droppourist weeded to winter.” If someone was going to build a new house or a stable, or a bathhouse, then it was necessary to look where the drops fall from the roofs, and where streams flow. In such places, buildings were not built. It was believed that here is the “beaten path of the water to the depths of the earth,” and the house would stand inseparable.
It was customary to guess in Vasily in the sun. If it rises in red circles, it promises a good harvest. They also watched the sky: the blue clouds in it foreshadowed heat and rain. There were other signs: for example, melting of snow on the north side of the anthill promised a warm and long summer.
The mistresses on this day were baked kalachiki, symbolizing the sun. It is not difficult to prepare such a treat today. You need to take 200 g of butter, one egg, one yolk, two tablespoons of yeast, nine tablespoons of milk and two tablespoons of sugar, mix everything and replace with flour so that the dough does not stick to the table. From this test it is necessary to stick the kalachiks, shower them with raisins, put on a baking sheet and let them rise, and then – grease with a beaten egg and bake.
