One of the largest Russia's oil refineries, located in the city of Kirishi in the northwest of the country, stopped a key processing unit following the Ukrainian Drone attack on the weekend, two sources from the Industry on Monday for the Reuters news agency.

Ukraine has intensified its attacks on Russia's energy infrastructure in an attempt to affect Moscow's war efforts, in the context in which negotiations for the conflict between the two countries have reached an impasse.

Russian officials said the Kirishinefteorgsintez plant of Surgutneftegaz, one of the two most important Russia refineries, has been among the targets attacked on Sunday by Ukrainian drones.

Alexander Drozdenko, the governor of the Leningrad region, said that three drones were destroyed in the Kirishi area and that the fire caused by the debris was extinguished. He said no one was injured.

Surgutneftegaz did not immediately respond to Reuters's request to send a point of view.

Two sources that spoke under the protection of anonymity, due to the sensitive situation, said that a unit of the factory was stopped following the fire caused by drones.

The stopped unit represents almost 40% of the total processing capacity of the factory, about 20 million metric tons a year, or 400,000 barrels per day.

The sources said that a unit burning oven and other equipment were damaged, adding that repairs could take about a month.

According to the same sources, the refinery will increase the operations in the sections that still operate by up to 20% to compensate for the damaged unit and which has been removed, which will allow it to maintain the processing volumes at approximately 75% of the nominal capacity.

According to industry sources, Kinef processed 17.5 million tonnes of oil in 2024, which represented 6.6% of the total volume of oil refining in Russia.

It produced 2 million tons of gasoline, 7.1 million tons of diesel, 6.1 million tons of fuel and 600,000 tons of bitumen.
