“On Friday, the first procurement procedure was launched within the Fast Danube 2 project-improving the navigation conditions in the Romanian-Bulgarian common sector, a strategic project funded by the mechanism for the interconnection of Europe.

What does Fast Danube mean? It is a project carried out together with the Bulgarian partners aimed at unlocking traffic on the Danube, eliminating areas for navigation and creating safer and more efficient conditions for water transport.

Specifically, the project will allow the ships to travel on the Danube almost all year (340 days/year), compared to the current situation of about 280 days”, Explained the minister.

Ciprian Șerban adds that this project leads to “Increasing by at least 20% of the volume of freight traffic, reducing costs and transport times and a major impact for the port of Constanța, which becomes even more important in southeastern Europe. ”

“Fast Danube is a project of European interest, part of the Rhine -Danube corridor, which connects the west to the east of the continent and connects 9 EU member states.

The first acquisition launched, yesterday, aims to monitor the impact on the environment, with an estimated value of 13.7 million euros and a duration of 9 years.

Through this project, Romania strengthens its role as a regional transport hub and uses one of the most important natural strengths: the Danube. At the same time, all the cities in Romania located along the Danube will benefit from the possibility of real development“, He said.

Romania has received funding for this project since 2024, being submitted by the Autonomous Administration of the River Administration of the Lower Danube Galati. The exact amount of financing is 195,499,818 euros.

The Danube was a priority in my mandate as a commissioner for transport and I am glad that a project that has for many years, Fast Danube 2, was finally submitted and funded by the European Commission with almost 200 million euros. The completion of this project would lead to a minimum period of 340 days per year of waterways. Improving waterway waterway is more necessary than ever, taking into account the new geopolitical realities in Eastern Europe ”said Adina Vălean.

We recall that in the autumn of 2022, Romania and Bulgaria agreed to build a third bridge over the Danube.

Then, the Minister of Transport, Sorin Grindeanu, discussed with the representatives of the Government of Bulgaria about the Fast Danube project, “A vital project for the entire European Union, in the context of the conflict in Ukraine.”
